Types of Music Videos

There are three main types of music videos: Narrative, Performance and Concept.
  1. Narrative Based Video:
  • A video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the lyrics and the genre of the song. This can be a good technique to use for engaging the audience.
     2.  Performance Based Videos:
  • A music video that features the band or artist performing either to the camera or an audience. This is a technique often used in rock music videos, with the band often performing as if they were in a concert.
     3. Concept Based Videos:
  • Thematic- The music video has a theme to it, for example OK Go's 'Here it goes again':           http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTAAsCNK7RA
  • Symbolic-A music video that contains symbols that build up meaning. The meaning of symbolic music videos are often unknown to the audience as it is usually personal to the artist.
Music videos will always be one of these or a combination of them.

The Music Industry

In the music industry, there are 3 main companies; Sony, Universal, Warner. It used to be include EMI, but this has recently been discounted as they are no longer very successful/profitable! In the USA there are over 3000 labels and 30,000 new music releases a year. These music labels are responsible for talent acquisition, contractual arrangements, marketing and promotion and enforcing copyright laws. In groups we looked at each of the big 3/4, and made posters containing vital information about them! Our group got to look at Sony, who originated from American Record Company in 1929 and became Sony Music Entertainment in 1991. Here is the poster we did on Sony Music Entertainment:
